HC Deb 21 March 1977 vol 928 c427W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is satisfied that the arming devices and other procedures provided to guard against any unintended or accidental triggering off of nuclear weapons carried by United States and RAF aircraft over the United Kingdom and other NATO countries are adequate; and if, within the limits of military security, he will indicate on what basis he makes this judgment.

Mr. Mulley

All I can say within the bounds of security is that the utmost effort is put into the very stringent safety arrangements which apply to nuclear weapons. In order to ensure that the safeguards are adequate we are helped by independent assessments. There is also close collaboration between us and our United States allies over weapons under their ownership. I am satisfied that these arrangements are adequate as a result of an examination of the procedures.
