asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many district councils have urban populations of over 200,000; and how many metropolitan districts have less.

The following non-metropolitan districts in England have Total Populations of over 200,000—separate figures for urban areas are not available;

Derby 215,200
Portsmouth 200,900

In Wales, Cardiff has a population of 284,400.

The following metropolitan districts have populations of under 200,000:

Solihull 199,700
St. Helens 194,700
Calderdale 192,400
Knowsley 191,400
Bury 180,400
South Tyneside 171,800

These figures are based on the Registrar-General's estimate at 30th June 1975.
