§ Mr. Pavittasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied with the way in which the Advertising Standards Authority code on cigarette advertising has worked since he agreed its provisions; what discussions he has had with the authority with a view to strengthening some of the provisions within the code; what progress has been made in the discussions he has had with the tobacco industry to curb the level and style of cigarette advertising promotion of sales to young people; and if he will make a statement.

Friend's reply to his Question on 8th March—[Vol. 927, c463–5]—I expect discussions involving the industry, the Advertising Standards Authority and the Government on the text and the method of implementation of a revised code of practice for cigarette advertising to be concluded shortly.
