HC Deb 10 March 1977 vol 927 cc661-3W
Mr. Jessel

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether figures provided by his Department for days lost at work due to strike action include days lost by employees laid off due to strike action by other groups of workers whether in the same or in different companies; and, if not, in what form the figures are published.

Mr. Golding

The official statistics of stoppage of work due to industrial disputes include: (1) workers directly involved in the disputes, and (2) workers indirectly involved who, although not themselves parties to the disputes, are laid off at establishments where the disputes occur. The series for working days lost covers the aggregate of days lost by workers in these two categories. The statistics do not reflect repercussions else-where, that is, at establishments other than those at which the disputes occur.

Mr. Jessel

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report figures for 1975 and 1976, the number of days lost by workers on official strike, on unofficial strike and as a result of lay-offs due to strikes.

Mr. Golding

The figures compiled relate to the aggregate number of working days lost by workers in the following two categories combined—separate figures for working days lost for each category are not compiled: (1) workers directly involved in disputes, and (2) workers indirectly involved, who, although not themselves parties to the disputes, are laid off at establishments where the disputes occur. Separate figures are compiled for working days lost in stoppages known to be official. It is not known whether all the remainder would be unofficial, but it is likely that the majority would be in this category. The compilation of the figures for "official" stoppages takes some time, and the most recent available relate to October 1976. In the following table the figures relate to the period January to October in each year.

Number of working days lost in stoppages in progress during the period January to October
1975 1976
All stoppages 5,657,000 2,775,000
Stoppages known to be official (included above) 1,032,000 345,000
The statistics do not include working days lost, through repercussions, at establishments other than those at which the disputes occur.
