HC Deb 10 March 1977 vol 927 cc642-3W
Mr. Welsh

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received regarding the imposition of stamp duty levied on sales of houses; and what plans he has to abolish this duty.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Stamp duty is not chargeable on all house transfers but only on those with a value above £15,000, and reduced rates are charged on transfers up to a value of £30,000. Suggestions are made from time to time for further relief, but I cannot comment on my right hon. Friend's intentions in that regard in advance of his Budget Statement.
