asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will consider seeking to recall the Northern Ireland Convention in view of the deteriorating political and security situation.

Mr. Mason

No. Under the terms of the Northern Ireland Act 1974 there is no longer any power for me to reconvene the Constitutional Convention, but I do not, in any case, believe that the time is right for a political initiative of the sort which the hon. Member has in mind.
