HC Deb 09 March 1977 vol 927 cc595-6W
Mr. Sandelson

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how much money was spent on overseas travel by his Department during the latest year for which figures are available; and of this sum, how much was spent on travel by air.

Mr. Wellbeloved

In the financial year 1975–76 the Department's expenditure on overseas travel by commercial means was of the order of £9.6 million. Of this, the amount spent on civil charter and civil air passages was £7.7 million. A high proportion of overseas movement is carried out by RAF transport aircraft combining productive peace-time flying on administrative trooping and exercises with essential training for operational situations. The withdrawal from overseas bases will progressively reduce the extent of overseas travel.
