§ Mr. John SilkinYes. The Food Standards Committee has completed its532W review and its report is published today. The Food Additives and Contaminants Committee which, in conjunction with the Toxicity Sub-Committee of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Chemicals in Food and the Environment, is examining the additives and processing aids use in beer production, will be reporting in due course. Both these committees have taken evidence from a wide range of interests. Quite apart from its price, the composition, gravity, description and method of dispense of beer are a matter of public interest. In April 1974 the Government asked the two committees to examine and report on these aspects. The report published today exposes the many issues involved in a balanced and considered way. I believe it makes a valuable contribution to public understanding. We will now be inviting comments. Only when we have received and considered them shall we make up our minds on whether and, if so, on what further action may be required. We shall, of course, need to take account of any developments in the EEC bearing on the matter. Should we have proposals for regulations under the Food and Drugs Act there will be consultation in accordance with Section 123(6) of that Act.
