HC Deb 07 March 1977 vol 927 cc425-7W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will indicate the total number of persons employed in the county of Cornwall in the month of January in the respective years 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977, together with the respective recorded unfilled vacancies.

Because of industrial action by some staff in the Department of Employment Group, complete counts of unfilled vacancies were not made in January 1975 and January 1977.

The vacancy figures relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices and are not a measure of total vacancies. Because of possible duplication, the two series should not be added together.

Employment estimates for June 1971 (b) and later dates are taken from censuses of employment and are not strictly comparable with those for 1971 (a) and earlier dates which were based on counts of national insurance cards. These earlier figures do not include some civil servants and Post Office workers who did not have NI cards and some people whose cards were exchanged in different areas from their place of work. In addition, employees at Saltash were included with those for Plymouth and Devonport at the earlier dates and where so excluded from the total for Cornwall. Saltash is included in the figures for later dates.
