§ Mr. Muddasked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will indicate the total number of persons employed in the county of Cornwall in the month of January in the respective years 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977, together with the respective recorded unfilled vacancies.

§ Mr. GoldingThe employment estimates requested are available only for June each year and the latest are for June 1975. These are shown in the following table together with the notified unfilled vacancies for both January and June each year:
EMPLOYEES IN EMPLOYMENT AND NOTIFIED UNFILLED VACANCIES IN CORNWALL Notified unfilled vacancies Employees in employment (000's) Employment offices Careers Offices 1969— January 680 269 June 96 1,576 736 1970— January 723 359 June 98 1,726 688 1971— January 798 246 June (a) 98 1,762 378 (b) 111 1972— January 713 145 June 112 2,065 477 1973— January 1,302 241 June 119 2,584 562 1974— January 1,553 365 June 121 2,944 615 1975— January Not available June 121 1,428 189 1976— January 386 91 June Not available 1,105 163 1977— January Not available Because of industrial action by some staff in the Department of Employment Group, complete counts of unfilled vacancies were not made in January 1975 and January 1977.
The vacancy figures relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices and are not a measure of total vacancies. Because of possible duplication, the two series should not be added together.
Employment estimates for June 1971 (b) and later dates are taken from censuses of employment and are not strictly comparable with those for 1971 (a) and earlier dates which were based on counts of national insurance cards. These earlier figures do not include some civil servants and Post Office workers who did not have NI cards and some people whose cards 427W were exchanged in different areas from their place of work. In addition, employees at Saltash were included with those for Plymouth and Devonport at the earlier dates and where so excluded from the total for Cornwall. Saltash is included in the figures for later dates.
