§ Mr. Warrenasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will consider revising the system whereby remission of sentence on prisoners excludes the period which they have spent on remand in custody, bearing in mind the period of time which this frequently involves and the overcrowding in prisons.
§ Mr. JohnI would refer the hon. Member to the Prison (Amendment) Rules 1972. These ensure that remission is granted on all the period spent in custody on remand which counts towards a prisoner's sentence under Section 67 of the Criminal Justice Act 1967. The existing provisions, therefore, already meet the point that the hon. Member has in mind.
