§ Mr. EnnalsThe object of the present policy of rubella immunisation is to protect women of childbearing age against the disease, so that their babies will not be harmed if they are exposed to rubella in early pregnancy. The Joint 245W Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation considered that this could best be achieved by offering rubella vaccination routinely to all girls between their eleventh and fourteenth birthdays so that they would be protected against the disease before entering the usual childbearing period. The Joint Committee further recommended that women already in the childbearing period should be tested serologically and if found to be susceptible to rubella, offered vaccination. The Joint Committee did not consider justifiable a programme of total eradication of rubella, which would involve vaccinating boys as well as girls.
