HC Deb 01 March 1977 vol 927 cc165-6W
29. Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers were unemployed (a) nationally, (b) on Merseyside and (c) in Kirkby at the latest available date; and when he expects them to find employment.

Mr. Golding

On 10th February 1977, 39,411 school leavers were registered as unemployed in Great Britain; 4,165 in the metropolitan county of Merseyside; and 382 in Kirkby. The full range of the Government's special measures for alleviating unemployment will continue to be available to unemployed young people on Merseyside and elsewhere.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school-leavers have obtained employment under (a) the recruitment subsidy for school-leavers and (b) the youth employment subsidy schemes.

Mr. Golding

I regret that precise information is not available. During the life of the recruitment subsidy for school leavers—13th October 1975 to 30th September 1976–30,140 applications were approved in respect of young people, mainly school leavers, entering employment. As at 25th February 1977, 10,505 applications have been approved in respect of young people, not necessarily school leavers, under the youth employment subsidy scheme.
