HC Deb 01 March 1977 vol 927 cc157-8W
Mr. Rippon

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many new jobs were created as a result of public investment in the North-East region between 1970 and 1974: how many were created in 1975 and 1976; and what is the estimated total for 1977.

Mr. Cryer

I regret that information is not available in precisely the form requested. Estimates of the number of jobs in the Northern Region as a result of offers of regional selective assistance under the Industry Act 1972 so far made are shown in the table below, together with estimates of jobs in the same region as a result of assistance under the Local Employment Act from 1969–70 onwards. Additional employment in manufacturing as a result of offers of selective financial assistance is expected to arise within four years from the offer being made. In addition, employment is expected to arise from the payment of regional development grants and from offers of assistance under Section 8 of the Industry Act 1972. Employment in the region will also have been stimulated or preserved by public expenditure on roads, other infrastructure and the nationalised industries in this period. Additional employment expected to arise in the Northern Region as a result of assistance under the Local Employment Acts and Section 7 of the Industry Act:

Local Employment Acts Industry Act 1972 (Section 7)
1970–71 22,733
