§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the Government's policy regarding the filling of appointments with a new applicant so far as the wages policy is concerned; whether, when a person who has held an appointment for many years leaves, his successor can be appointed at any higher rank; and whether it is possible to dismiss such a person and reappoint him at a higher wage or salary scale.
§ Mr. Harold WalkerThe general advice given has been that any new appointment should be made in accordance with the established provisions of the pay structure concerned. Attempts to circumvent the policy by means of unjustifiable upgradings and inflated salaries are not acceptable.
