HC Deb 30 June 1977 vol 934 cc319-20W
Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the average annual electricity bill for a private consumer in each of the electricity board areas in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Eadie

The average revenue obtained from domestic consumers by each of the electricity boards in Great Britain and by the Northern Ireland Electricity Service in 1975–76—the latest year for which accounts for all the boards concerned have been published—was as follows:

Electricity Board or Service Average Revenue
£
London 82
South Eastern 92
Southern 90
South Western 97
Eastern 90
East Midlands 72
Midlands 83
South Wales 72
Merseyside and North Wales 80
Yorkshire 75
North Eastern 68
North Western 76
South of Scotland 94
North of Scotland 104
Northern Ireland 75

NOTES: (1) The different figures reflect the different level of consumption—both total consumption and the relative amounts consumed under different tariffs—in one area compared with another as well as different tariff levels. In particular, the relatively high figures for the Scottish boards reflect high average consumption in Scotland.

(2) The figures for the English, Welsh and Scottish boards were derived from the annual reports and accounts for 1975–76 of the boards concerned and those for Northern Ireland from information provided by the Northern Ireland Electricity Service.
