Sir Frederic Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will publish in the Official Report statistics showing the annual expenditure by United States forces in the United Kingdom in both £ sterling and United States dollars at average annual exchange rates from 1958–59 to 1975–76, or any shorter period for which statistics are available, under the headings of (a) Government-to-Government payments for goods and services and (b) private expenditure by United States forces and their dependants in the United Kingdom; and whether there are any offset arrangements with the United States Government.

The information is as follows:

doing some work on a draft statute for directly elected Members but that no proposals have been put to the Assembly itself; nor have any proposals on salaries for Members of the Assembly been communicated to the Council of Ministers. It is the view of the British Government that all concerned should remember the need to avoid extravagance in framing the necessary financial provisions.

Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if, pursuant to the Written Answer, Official Report, 22nd April, column 162, he will seek to raise in the Council of Ministers the need for the financial arrangements for directly elected United Kingdom Members to the European Assembly to reflect national incomes policies.

I will certainly bear in mind my hon. Friend's suggestion in any discussion of this subject in the Council of Ministers.
