§ Sir Bernard Braineasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, in the light of the forthcoming constitutional talks on the Gilbert Islands and the Banaban plea for the separation of Ocean Island, why, since the Turks and Caicos Islands were annexed to Jamaica by Order in Council in 1873, they did not remain with Jamaica when it became independent in 1962.
§ Mr. LuardAlthough the Turks and Caicos Islands were annexed to Jamaica in 1873 in response to a petition from the inhabitants they were never integrated with Jamaica and retained a separate administration. They ceased to be a dependency of Jamaica in 1959 when the Turks and Caicos Islands (Constitution) Order 1959 was brought into operation and the Governor of Jamaica became at the same time Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands. When Jamaica became independent in 1962 it was generally agreed that the islands should remain a British dependency.
