§ Mr. MacFarquharasked the Minister of Overseas Development how many British teachers of English have been sent to Third World countries in each of the last 10 years by her Department, or with funds allocated by her Department, excluding British Council sponsored teachers.
§ Mr. TomlinsonThe numbers of people recruited during the years specified for service in the field of education in the developing countries, who were financed wholly or in part from funds allocated by my Department, are as shown in the 557W table below. The figures include recruitment under the British Volunteer Programme. I regret that our statistics do not readily show how many of these teach English. Many teach more than one subject of which one may often be English. The number engaged on behalf of my Department by the British Council specifically to teach English and funded entirely by my Department are shown in the second column of the table.
