asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the present average weekly pay of a police constable and the present national average earnings for all non-manual male workers; what is the proportion, expressed as a percentage, between the two; and what were the comparable figures for each year from 1970 to 1976 inclusive.

There can be no commitment at this stage to what it will or will not be possible to do for the police in the next round of pay policy, the guidelines for which have not yet been decided, but my hope is that the guidelines will offer scope for greater flexibility.
