HC Deb 23 June 1977 vol 933 c494W
Mr. MacFarquhar

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many registered and unregistered schools of English there are in the United Kingdom;

(2) how many schools of English in the United Kingdom are recognized schools;

(3) how many foreign students have attended schools of English in Great Britain in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Oakes

Schools for students over the compulsory school age are not required to register with my Department. Sixty-three schools of English are currently recognised as efficient; my Department does not collect statistics about schools which are not recognised. In 1976, the only year for which figures are available, recognised schools of English had 8,624 overseas students.
