HC Deb 21 June 1977 vol 933 cc448-9W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received from the Council of Elders of the Banaban Commmunity in Rabi, Fiji, following his statement to the House on 3rd June 1977 on the subject of the proposed ex gratiapayment to that community.

Mr. Tomlinson

The statement issued by the Rabi Council of Leaders following my right hon. Friend's statement to the House on 27th May was conveyed to Her Majesty's Government in a letter to my right hon. and noble Friend. Copies of that letter have been placed in the Library of the House.

Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will issue a White Paper setting forth Her Majesty's Government's version of the dispute between the Banaban Community and themselves regarding the status and future of Ocean Island.

Mr. Tomlinson

I do not think a White Paper on the status and future of Ocean Island would be justified at this time. The Government's position on the future of Ocean Island was put before the House in the statement by my right hon. Friend on 27th May.
