Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many of the 4,469 students due to leave Scottish colleges of education this month have been offered appropriate teaching posts;

(2) if he will record in the Official Report the number of teaching vacancies currently available in each of the Scottish regions for newly qualified teachers, giving a breakdown into primary and secondary categories.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what policies he plans to implement to make special staffing allowances for schools in socially deprived areas.

My right hon. Friend is at present examining measures that might be adopted to secure the employment of additional teachers in schools in these areas, if resources can be made available.
