HC Deb 20 June 1977 vol 933 c338W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what will be the effect on the employment situation in Kirkby in the event of the closure of the Plessey factory; and what measures he will be taking to improve the situation.

Mr. Golding

I understand that as a result of redeployment to other work within the company, the number of employees now facing redundancy is much smaller than was originally feared. Other workers have left voluntarily and we do not know how many workers will finally sign the unemployment register. It is not, therefore, possible to forecast with any degree of certainty what effect the closure of the factory will have on the employment situation. I can assure my hon. Friend that the Manpower Services Commission will do all it can to help the workers affected.
