HC Deb 20 June 1977 vol 933 cc357-8W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of Stale for Wales under what circumstances a social service department of a local authority may allow a homeless mother and child to be boarded out rather than be split up with the child taken into care of the local authority.

Mr. Barry Jones

A social service department of a local authority would normally seek to avoid splitting up a homeless mother and child by using its powers under Section 1 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1963 to meet lodging or hotel costs rather than by taking the child into care if circumstances were such that other temporary accommodation for homeless families was not available.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will state the maximum period for which a social services department of a county council may pay board and lodging for a homeless person.

Mr. Barry Jones

No maximum period is laid down.
