Miss Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many (a) one-parent and (b) two-parent families with dependent children receive family income supplement; and what is the average amount in each case over the latest available 12-month period.

Mr. Orme

36,000 one-parent and 45,000 two-parent families were receiving family income supplement at the end of February 1977, the latest date for which information is available. Average weekly payments over the preceding 12 months were £4.80 and £4.50 respectively.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many (a) one-parent and (b) two-parent families with dependent children receive the maximum amount of family income supplement.

Mr. Orme

5,000 families in each case at the end of February 1977, the latest date for which information is available.
