§ Mr. MacGregorasked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection when he now expects the International Electrotechnical Commission proposals for a new international standard design of plugs and sockets to come before Her Majesty's Government for a decision; and, in the light of the view of the National Consumer Council, supported by many other consumer organisations, that no changeover should take place to such a standard in the United Kingdom unless adequate evidence is produced to show strong advantages for industry, trade or consumers, if he will ensure that the proposals are discussed in Parliament prior to any decision being taken.
§ Mr. John FraserAgreement has not yet been reached under the procedures of the International Electrotechnical Commission on complete specifications for a voluntary international standard for a unified system of electrical plugs and socket outlets for domestic and similar purposes. Publication of such a standard could not take place before 1978. If a standard were published, the Government would then take careful account of representations from the National Consumer Council and other consumer organisations and from industry and trade330W before reaching a conclusion on the possible introduction of the system. Any Government proposals would be published, and depending on their nature, would be open for debate in Parliament.
