HC Deb 20 June 1977 vol 933 cc339-40W
Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement about the main conclusions reached in studies carried out at Turner and Newall, Rochdale, by the Department of Health and Social Security Cancer Epidemiology and Clinical Trials Unit at Oxford University.

Mr. John Grant,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 15th June 1977; Vol. 933, c. 179–80], gave the following information:

The studies carried out at Turner and Newall, Rochdale are still continuing and to that extent firm conclusions have not yet been reached. The data is capable of a number of interpretations, some of which are described in a very recent paper by Mr. Peto, of the DHSS Cancer Epidemiology and Clinical Trials Unit. This paper has been circulated to the members of the Advisory Committee on Asbestos and to participants at the forthcoming meetings of the committee to be held in public. A copy has also been sent to the hon. Member.
