HC Deb 17 June 1977 vol 933 cc287-8W
Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what discussions he has had in the past six months with the computer industry regarding support for a European-based computer structure and company structure across national boundaries.

Mr. Cryer

None, though other forms of European co-operation have been discussed with industry.

Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will make a statement on the way co-operation should be obtained within EEC countries relating to software and research and development as it affects the computer industry.

Mr. Cryer

The United Kingdom is taking an active part in discussions within the EEC on co-operative research and development projects in computer software and applications, following an initiative by the EEC Commission. One project, on matching human organs and blood, is already under way, projects on legal information retrieval and computer-aided design are soon to be launched, and further projects are under consideration. Discussions have yet to begin on the more far-reaching proposals which the EEC Commission has put forward in its four-year programme for the European data processing industry.
