HC Deb 16 June 1977 vol 933 cc256-7W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what proportion of the correspondence sent out by his Department to local authorities in Wales is in the Welsh language.

Mr. John Morris

The information is not available. My Department's practice is to reply in Welsh to letters received in that language.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what steps he has taken to reverse the decline in the number of Welsh speakers, and what has been the practical results up to the present date of his policy.

Mr. John Morris

This Government have taken a wide range of steps, financial and otherwise, to support and encourage the Welsh language. In the nature of things results in this field cannot be quantified. It is the policy of the Government to further the language.
