HC Deb 16 June 1977 vol 933 c277W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is satisfied with the controls on ocean going tankers which wash out their tanks at sea off the coast of Gwynedd, with the danger of toxic materials poisoning the coast of Caernarvon.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The stringent 1969 Amendments to the 1954 Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea by Oil will come into force generally next January. They are already being applied to ships of British and certain other flags. Work is being done to bring into effect as soon as possible the 1973 Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, which covers the discharge of noxious substances other than oil.
