asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many pedestrians have been injured on zebra crossings and pelican crossings, respectively, during each of the last five years for which records are available;

(2) what are the rates of accidents and injury to pedestrians on zebra and pelican crossings, respectively;

(3) how many accidents have occurred involving injury to pedestrians where zebra crossings have been replaced by pelican crossings.

I regret that the information is not available in the form requested, but the following figures are available:

departure from bridge design standards that have a bearing on the safety of the structure. Prior to April 1974, grant was approved after the Department had accepted the general principles adopted in a design and on completion schemes were inspected to ensure that the works covered by the grant had been carried out.
