HC Deb 15 June 1977 vol 933 c207W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in view of the facts that Mr. Michael Kroohs, an illegal immigrant, was allowed to work in the United Kingdom, was sentenced to imprisonment, was again allowed to remain illegally, and has been awarded £393 for wrongful dismissal by an industrial tribunal which may have to be paid for out of public funds due to the bankruptcy of his former employers, whether he will cause in vestigation to be made into how this series of illegalities was permitted without the various authorities taking action to deal with the initial breaches of the law on illegal entry.

Dr. Summerskill

There are no grounds for believing that Mr. Kroohs entered this country illegally, and as an EEC national he is entitled to work here. He was convicted of offences of theft, obtaining money by deception, and remaining in the United Kingdom beyond the time of the limited leave to enter that was given him upon arrival. My right hon. Friend has made an order for his deportation.
