Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish details of the total number of convictions for murder, attempted murder and culpable homicide, respectively, in the year 1976; and if he will publish a table showing the comparable figures for each year since 1945.

The figures for 1976 are not yet available. The numbers of persons convicted in Scotland for murder, attempted murder and culpable homicide in the years 1945 to 1975 are set out in the table below.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland by what percentage the total number of murder convictions in the past 10 years exceeds or is less than the 10 years before the introduction in Parliament of the Bill to abolish capital punishment.

Mr. Millan

The number of persons convicted of murder between 1966 and 1975 exceeds the number convicted of murder between 1955 and 1964 by 577 per cent.
