asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his Department's estimate of the increase in the number of unemployed people over the next 12 months arising from the return to free collective bargaining; and if this matter was discussed with the TUC before his statement on 15th July in the House.

There are transitional scales of annual pay for constables aged 20 or over on entry. In addition, all members of the force receive a supplement to salary, which is not included in the above scales, equivalent to 5 per cent. of total pay and certain allowances, subject to a minimum of £2.50 a week and a maximum of £4 a week. The current maximum limits of rent allowances for each of the ranks are as follows:
