HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc441-2W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representation she has received to extend the number of school premises remaining open throughout school holidays; and if she will make a statement.

Miss Margaret Jackson

My right hon. Friend has received no such representations. The provision of facilities on school premises for children of school age during school holidays is a matter for local authorities.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many places are provided for the care of school age children between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm during normal school holiday periods;

(2) how many places are provided for the care of school age children between the hours of 4 pm and 6 pm during normal school term periods.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The information is not available. A survey conducted in 1975 showed that at that time about 80 local authorities provided facilities for children of school age on school premises during the summer holidays. Over 30 authorities provided facilities before and/or after school hours during term time.
