HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c460W
Mr. Jim Spicer

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what evidence there is to show that the protection afforded under the common agricultural policy is resulting in an expansion of the canning industry for both peaches and fruit cocktail within the EEC.

Mr. Strang

The protection afforded to these industries is the common customs tariff on Community imports of canned peaches and canned fruit cocktail which ranges from 21–24 per cent. The new member States will apply these rates in full at the end of transition on 1st January 1978. There is also a levy on added sugar. I have no information on the effect this protection may be having on the Community processing industries.
