HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc422-3W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will place in the Library a copy of the report of the Metropolitan Commissioner on the subject of Mr. Maurice Jones's allegations against the police.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

No. Such reports from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis to me are not made public.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if, in his capacity as Police Authority for the Metropolis, he is aware of the complaints made by Mr. Maurice Jones about the treatment he received at the hands of the Metropolitan Police following his arrest at the Grunwick site; whether he attaches any credence to Mr. Jones' suggestion that plain-clothes officers threatened to have his child run over and his wife expelled from Great Britain; and if these allegations are false, what steps he is taking to refute these attacks on the reputation of the British police in general and on individual members of the Metropolitan CID in particular;

(2) if, in view of the exceptional circumstances surrounding Mr. Maurice Jones' allegations against the Metropolitan Police, he will invite the Police Complaints Board to consider the letter in which he made these charges, notwithstanding Mr. Jones' inability to present his complaint in person due to his absence in East Germany;

(3) if he has received a report from the Metropolitan Police Commissioner on the treatment accorded to Mr. Maurice Jones following his arrest at Grunwick's; whether he accepts the Commissioner's version of events or the version put forward by Mr. Jones in a letter from East Germany; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what date Mr. Maurice Jones was interviewed at Wembley Police Station, for what purposes; who attended the interviews; why fingerprints were taken; what files were shown to him or referred to and for what purposes; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the rank and status of the police officers who interrogated the constituent of the hon. Member for Sheffield, Heeley, Mr. Maurice Jones, at Wembley Police Station on 23rd June 1977, following his arrest at or near the Grunwick premises in Willesden.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I refer the hon. Members to the reply which I gave to Questions by my hon. Friend the Member for Don Valley (Mr. Kelley) on 25th July.—[Vol. 936, c. 106–8.]

Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement as soon as he has completed his inquiries into the allegations about police harassment and brutality by Messrs. Scargill and Jones.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will add to the appeal he made on Friday 22nd July in West Yorkshire to Mr. Maurice Jones to return home that an independent inquiry will take place, outside the scope of the police, and that a report will be published.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I refer the hon. Members to the reply which I gave to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Sheffield, Heeley (Mr. Hooley) on 27th July.
