HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc436-7W
Mr. Cormack

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much land was acquired for the purpose of motorway and motorway service area construction between 1960 and 1976; and how much will be required to complete similar projects currently under construction.

Mr. Horam

Assuming an average land take for motorways of 20 acres per mile and for service areas of 20–30 acres, trunk road motorways have taken about 24,000 acres and service areas about 1,000 acres in England. Motorways currently under construction will take about 1,800 acres and service areas about 20 acres. A furrther 18 acres has been acquired for extensions to existing service areas.
