HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc433-4W
Mr. Mather

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the expected opening date for the M25 section which will serve inter-airport traffic between Heathrow and Gatwick.

Mr. Horam

It is hoped that all the sections of the M25 connecting Heathrow and Gatwick Airports will be open to traffic by 1981, subject to the satisfactory completion of the necessary statutory procedures and to the availability of funds.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when it is now intended to publish the statutory notices in connection with the Hunton Bridge-South Mimms section of the M25 outer London orbital lorry route; and when it is intended that any public inquiry into the scheme will be held.

Mr. Horam

It is hoped to publish draft orders for the Micklefield Green-South Mimms section of the M25 in the spring of 1978 and, if a public inquiry is necessary, to hold it in the following autumn.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when it is now planned to commence work on the Hunton Bridge-South Mimms section of the M25 outer London orbital lorry route; and what is the latest estimated cost of this road.

Mr. Horam

Subject to the satisfactory completion of all the relevant statutory procedures and to the availability of funds at the time, it is hoped to start construction in 1981. The estimated cost is £26 million at November 1976 prices.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Transport where it is intended that any public inquiry into the proposed Hunton Bridge to South Mimms section of the M25 outer London orbital lorry route will be held.

Mr. Horam

A venue reasonably convenient for statutory objectors will be arranged nearer the date of any public inquiry.

Mr. Tebbit

asked the Secretary of State for Transport to what standard, namely, two-lane motorway or three-lane motorway, each of the remaining sections of the M25 will be built.

Mr. Horam

A decision on the standards necessary for the remaining sections will be made at the appropriate time in the light of the principles set out in the recent transport policy White Paper and the orbital function of the M25.
