Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list in the Official Report the members of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, indicating their qualifications, the date on which each member was originally appointed and the date upon which each respective member will become due for reappointment.

I have been asked to reply. The Members of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England are:

Chairman: Sir Edmund Compton, GCB, KBE, formerly Comptroller and Auditor-General and Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration;

Deputy Chairman: Mr. J. Rankin, QC;

Lady Bowden; formerly Regional Director,

Department of Industry;

Mr. J. Brockbank; formerly Clerk of

Durham County Council;

Professor M. Chisholm; Professor of Geography, University of Cambridge;

Mr. R. Thornton; CBE, DL, formerly Chief Executive of Leicestershire County Council and Town Clerk of Leicester;

Sir Andrew Wheatley; CBE, formerly Clerk of Hampshire County Council.

The Chairman, Deputy Chairman, Professor Chisholm and Sir Andrew Wheatley were appointed to the Commission Designate on 25th November 1971, before the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. Their formal appointments to the Commission were made on 1st November 1972, after Royal Assent. The Chairman's and Sir Andrew Wheatley's appointments expire on 30th November 1977, and the Deputy Chairman's and Professor Chisholm's on 30th November 1978. Lady Bowden and Mr. Thornton were appointed on 1st December 1976 and Mr. Brockbank on 21st December 1976, and all three appointments expire on 30th November 1979.
