HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc492-3W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the average pay for consultants employed full-time within the National Health Service for the financial year ended March 1977.

Mr. Moyle

I regret that this information is not available. The salary scale of a whole-time NHS hospital consultant rises by four incremental stages from £7,536 to £10,689 per annum, and a supplement of up to £312 per annum is currently payable at salary levels below £8,500 per annum. All consultants are eligible to be considered for distinction awards; about one in three hold these at any one time. Consultants may also receive fees from public sources for domiciliary and exceptional consultations, lecture fees, family planning work and for certain other items of work which are not part of their NHS contractual duties and do not involve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
