HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c513W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the weekly or annual estimated cash benefits being received by those top civil servants who use a Government supplied car with driver to take them to and from the railway station and their offices on the assumption that these tax-free emoluments are received as the only income of married men on the full salary of a Permanent Secretary at the highest Civil Service rate.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I assume that my hon. Friend is asking for an estimate of the grossed-up value of the benefits obtained by the individuals concerned from the use of a pooled car. This might be about £1,400 per head, on the basis that their incomes consisted solely of their salaries and they were entitled only to the married person's allowance.
