HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c610W
Mr. Dykes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what up-to-date figures have been supplied to him from independent monitoring sources concerning the amount of money spent on advertising the 11 new NSM cigarette brands in the United Kingdom to date; and how these figures compare with the recently published estimates from sources such as the Health Education Council.

Mr. Moyle

None; no comparison is therefore possible.

Sir George Young

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services which cigarette manufacturers are refusing to agree to the code of practice on cigarette sponsorship; and when he expects the new health warnings which he announced on 8th March to appear on cigarette packs and advertisements.

Mr. Denis Howell

I have been asked to reply.

A draft code of practice is the subject of negotiation with the tobacco industry. I understand from my right hon. Friend that the revised health warning may be expected to appear on cigarette packets by October in the case of all major brands; the new health warning will appear in Press advertisements from 1st October and as soon as practicable thereafter on other advertisements.

Sir George Young

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when he expects the new code of practice on cigarette sponsorship to be agreed.

Mr. Denis Howell

I have been asked to reply.

I hope that arrangements for controlling sports sponsorship will have been settled with the industry by the time Parliament returns.
