HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 cc546-7W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if his answer on fish catches, Official Report, 19th July, columns 481–2, includes cetaceans; and what are the relevant figures for cetaceans.

Mr. Bishop

The data given on fish catches in my reply of 19th July did not include cetaceans. The Whaling Industry (Regulation) Act 1934, as amended by the Fishery Limits Act 1976, prohibits the taking or treating of whales within United Kingdom fishery limits. In recent years, Norway has taken about 100 minke whales annually between 12 and 200 miles of United Kingdom baselines. There is no commercial fishery for other cetaceans within United Kingdom fishery limits.
