HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c636W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the reasons for the decision of Her Majesty's Government not to increase their holding in the British Sugar Corporation following upon the Corporation's rights issue; and what steps, if any, are being taken to ensure that Tatle and Lyle Ltd., the rival sugar refining concern, are not acquiring any holding in this Corporation.

Mr. Bishop

I have been asked to reply.

The decision not to increase the Government's holding of British Sugar Corporation shares was taken because of the present need to limit public expenditure. No steps are being taken concerning the possibility of Tate and Lyle Limited acquiring a holding in the corporation.
