HC Deb 27 July 1977 vol 936 cc262-3W
Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether any changes in the MOT test on private cars are likely always to be based exclusively upon accident prevention considerations, based upon statistical evidence from road accident figures; and what other criteria are considered in this regard.

Mr. Horam

The MOT test for private cars is concerned with the conditions of those components most likely to affect the operation of the vehicle, the safety of its occupants and the safety and convenience of other road users. In deciding the scope, account is also taken of environmental considerations and the need to reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring; accident statistics are not the only factor taken into consideration.

Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is contemplating any further extension of the scope of the MOT test on private cars; and if any possible changes are under active consideration.

Mr. Horam

No. The scope of the MOT test was last extended on 1st January 1977 and my right hon. Friend is not considering any further changes.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many authorised vehicle testing stations were in existence in the parliamentary constituency of Camden, Hampstead and in the London borough of Camden at 1st May 1977, 1st May 1974, on the date when vehicle testing first became compulsory and the latest date, respectively.

Mr. Horam

I regret that this information is not readily available, but I will write to the hon. Member concerning the information he has asked for.
