HC Deb 27 July 1977 vol 936 c254W
43. Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what assistance he proposes to give Shetland herring processors in view of the ban on North Sea herring fishing.

Mr. Millan

While I appreciate that the ban is causing difficulties, it is generally recognised by all sides of the industry that it is necessary if the stock is to return to a viable level. In the meantime, both fishermen and processors are seeking possible alternative sources of herring and supplies of other species, and I have no proposals for assistance to the processors.
