HC Deb 25 July 1977 vol 936 cc87-8W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will give a detailed list of the salary, expenses, emoluments, including house, cars and entertainment expenses to be paid to the United Kingdom's new Ambassador in the United States of America; and how these compare with the same allowances given in the last few years.

Mr. Tomlinson

Mr. Jay will be paid the following annual emoluments:

£
Salary 18,675
Stage 2 Pay Supplement Allowance 208
Representational Secondment Allowance 1,401
Frais 43,404*
Allowance for children at post 858
Child Benefit 208
* This sum represents the estimated cost of Mr. Jay's living and working expenses in Washington, less a contribution of £9,221 representing his estimated salary after tax. It includes the sum of £16,414 for entertainment expenses. It has been reduced by £44 to take account of the introduction of child benefit.

Mr. Jay will live in the official residence which is owned by the British Government, and will have the use of an official car.

In common with other United Kingdom-based members of his staff Mr. Jay will be eligible for reimbursement of the cost of medical treatment for himself and his family provided that such treatment is as far as possible compatible with National Health Service standards and subject to the usual National Health Service contributions. He will also be eligible for partial reimbursement of the cost of educating his 3 children in Washington, and of a mother's help to look after them.

With the exception of salary and frais, the Ambassador's entitlements have not altered over the last few years.

When he was appointed in March 1974, Sir Peter Ramsbotham's salary was £16,350. It was increased to the present level in January 1975. The stage 2 pay supplement has been paid since January 1977.

In 1974, Sir Peter's frais were £22,058. They were increased by stages to take account of United States inflation and the fall in the value of sterling, and have been paid at the present level since November 1976.
