HC Deb 21 July 1977 vol 935 cc721-2W
Mr. Wyn Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many persons there were in full-time employment in Wales in December 1959, 1964, 1970, 1974 and 1976.

Mr. Golding

Estimates of the numbers of employees in employment in Wales are available on a quarterly basis from June 1974. For earlier dates, only mid-year figures are available. The following table gives estimates at June for each year specified and at December 1974 and December 1976. The figures do not distinguish between full-time and part-time employment.

June 1959 928,000
June 1964—
(a) 977,000
(b) 979,000
June 1965—
(a) 985,000
(b) 1,028,000
June 1970 967,000
June 1974 992,000
December 1974 1,001,000
June 1976* 982,000
December 1976* 982,000
*Provisional.

The estimates for June 1964(b) and later dates are based on a revised method of calculation and are not strictly comparable with those for earlier dates.

The figures for June 1965(6) and later dates are from the continuous series of employment estimates which removes discontinuities present in the earlier data.

The estimates do not include employees within the Welsh sector of Chester employment office area, currently estimated to number about 6,000.
