Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what estimate he has made of the extra cost to education authorities of British Railways' decision to end half price season tickets to scholars aged 14 years and over.

It is estimated that withdrawal of the scholars' season ticket will cost local authorities who currently pay for such tickets between £300,000 and £400,000 in a full year, after allowing the effect of the rate support grant and assuming that they continue to buy the same number of tickets.
